Tahiti Accommodation Search:
Tahiti accommodation is amongst the most glamourous in the south pacific but unfortunately it is also amongst the most expensive. The islands ooze charm and sophistication with some fantastic coastal scenery, exceptional scuba diving (particularly moorea, bora and tuamotu) and some of the most exquisite beach resorts in the world with beautiful overwater bungalows. Many of the large resorts are part of international hotel chains and offer very high standards of service to match the high price tags, whilst the smaller boutique resorts offer more individualism. There are also a fair amount of pension guesthouses, particularly on Moorea, which offer more affordable accomodation to its guests. There are only a few backpackers hostels around the islands.
tahiti islands (Tahiti is the name of the main island) has a reputation as being the ultimate romantic destination and staying in an over-water bungalow is the stuff of dreams. Most tourists come for the sun and sand and tend to explore the accessable Society Islands which include glamorous Bora Bora, down to earth Moorea and half a dozen other high volcanic islands. All regions are well connected by regular flights from Papeete on the main island of Tahiti, although flights to outer islands are expensive.
The main island of Tahiti in the Society Islands offers exceptionally beautiful mountains and coastal scenery but no special beaches except for the unusual black sand beaches on the northern coast. It is an excellent island for exploring with lots of day tour opportunities but most tourists stay only a few days before heading off to other islands.
Neighbouring Moorea , clearly visible off the west coast and just a 10 minute hop by plane, is also great for exploring and with several nice sandy beaches and lots of large beach resorts and smaller pensions. Most of these are along the north coast between the two stunning bays with the larger resorts offering over the water bungalows and artificial beaches.
The famous lagoon island of Bora Bora, a 40-minute flight to the north-west of tahiti, is definitely spectacular and has some equisite beaches along the tiny islands surrounding the main island. Here you'll find lots of large hotels both on the main island and on the tiny uninhabited offshore islands, all offering spectacular over-the-water bungalows with steps leading down into the lagoon. Bora Bora offers plenty of commercial activities on the lagoon - for many it is too commercial to offer the true South Pacific escapism.
Other islands in the Society Group include the large island of Huahine, renowned as the most traditional in the Society Islands with lots of ancient sites, the twin islands of Raiatea & Tahaa which have lovely lagoon islands, lots of bays for sailing and are also good for exploring. The outer Society Island of Maupiti , about 50-minutes flight from tahiti, is a small version of Bora Bora with gorgeous tiny islands but here tourism is limited to a few small pensions.
For those looking for that secluded beach in a stunning setting, head for the Tuamotu Islands, a sprawling mass of tiny coral islands about an hour flight to the east of the main island of Tahiti. The region is also known for its spectacular snorkelling and scuba diving.
The high and rugged remote islands of the Marquesas are off the beaten track and offer a unique glimpse of traditional Polynesian life. Here the culture remains strong and there are many unusual and interesting archaelogical sites and a great wilderness to explore.
